Benefits of Doula Support
Sarah Martin, HypnoBirthing mom and childbirth educator

»What is a Doula?

The word Doula is a Greek word meaning “women’s servant.” A Doula is a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to a mother before, during and shortly after childbirth to help her achieve the healthiest, most satisfying experience possible.

Following a difficult birth with her son, Sarah wanted a different birth experience when she became pregnant with her daughter. With greater prenatal education and the help of a HypnoBirthing® Practitioner and Doula in NYC, Sarah had a peaceful birth where she felt empowered and respected throughout her labor and birth.

A Doula Does:

  • Provide physical and emotional support to a mother and her partner during labor and delivery.
  • Facilitate communication with staff in order for you to have the necessary information you need to make informed decisions.

A Doula Does NOT:

  • Provide clinical or medical care.
  • Make decisions for you.
  • Take the place of the mother’s spouse/partner during the birth. A doula assists and supports both the mother and her partner in achieving their desired birth.

»Why use a Doula?

According to the American College of Gynecology and Obstetrics (ACOG):

Women benefit from continuous emotional support and the use of non-pharmacologic methods to manage pain. Support offered by trained labor coaches such as doulas has been associated with improved birth outcomes, including shortened labor and fewer operative deliveries.”
